Main character fail

July 21, 2010

Sooo my druid ended up going back to ICC the day after his first adventure and knocked out the plague wing and the crimison halls (and also somehow managed to finish the Blood Queen fight as a vampire, though I didn’t realize she was so close to dying and was frantically running around looking for someone to bite, haha). Those are two achievements that my main character, poor lil Avvy, hasn’t completed. (Of course I don’t even HAVE a 10 man group with Avvy, but still!)

Yesterday as many of you know the ICC pity buff went up to 30%, so I was hoping our guild 25-man (that Avvy is committed to) would actually be able to down Putricide and/or move on to the Crimison Halls (we’ve downed the princes once in 25 man but frustratingly haven’t returned to that fight since then, as the raid leaders seem bent on getting down Putricide first for some reason). Unfortunately we had to pug out 5 or 6 spots and after several attempts could only get Putri down to about 13%. Frustrating!

Tonight is supposed to be our continuation 25-man ICC run of the week but if history is any example we’ll only get about 13 raiders online, it won’t fill, and we’ll end up bumming around Dalaran all night or running VoA instead. Double frustrating!

There was one amusing thing about last night… (real names blacked out to protect the innocents!)

really WoW?

sorry for the fuzziness, I took it with mah cellphone!

That’s right, my friend Garrett has been offline longer than he’s been ALIVE.

I thought it was merely a glitch with Avvy’s friends list but after the raid I switched to a few alts and the same thing showed up on all of them. Heh!

Fun-sucking dramas, STO

January 15, 2010

Well the last few days or so were a combination of annoying guild drama and some quality time spent poking around the Star Trek Online beta. (By the way I love the bug? feature? where you beam to space and instead of seeing your ship, it’s just your little toon, floating in the vast expanses… on the flip side sometimes you’ll beam down to a planet and see yourself scooting around as a mini-ship!)

anyone out here?

she was a star collector

lol

pew pew! I tractor beam youu

Me and my trusty ship, the USS Kahlua, made some Borgs go explody and assembled an away team of redshirts I called Stu, Moe, and Bobby. They enjoy shooting at random mobs and aggroing everything in their path (mostly because I forgot to set them to passive…)

But anyway, back in wow-land, events of last week were somehow the catalyst of 2 officers gquitting, 2 more stepping down, and 3 changes of GM within 24 hours. The brewing undercurrents of drama have been slowly splintering their way across the guild for a long time now, like a crack creeping across the frozen surface of a pond, only to finally explode in a fireball of heated guild forum postings and vent craziness. There is one officer in particular (who will remain nameless since I don’t really know who reads this blog) who has caused some unspoken grumblings in the guild over the past few months. This officer  clashed with 2 other officers specifically and this all came to a head in our guild 25-man ICC run last week, which resulted in the 2 other officers gquitting and the aforementioned craziness.

The dust is settling somewhat at this point but it always makes for a nail-biting time – will the guild go up in a fireball of doom and implode upon itself? Will the new GM ferociously gkick people he/she doesn’t like? What will become of the tadpoles?!

In other news I finally dual-specced Nadeau so he no longer has to quest as a lolresto. Now he can zap face as… a boomchicken!

DROOOO

I said a boom chicka boom

Of course I conveniently forgot that he has absolutely zero gear with hit rating on it, but at least when he misses now, it will be with more oomph!

Oh, and don’t you love the new armory features!? As soon as I found out you could save your toon in a pose that EVERYone would see when they visit your profile, I immediately went and posed all my toons in funny/stupid ways. I think my favorite is the fruity male blood elf hand wavy thing

Oh and by the way, if you live in Seattle like I do, I highly reccomend you stay away from downtown this weekend

Altasaurus

January 10, 2010

It’s been kind of a low-key weekend in Avvy-land; I did much of the usual – a few dailies here, a random heroic there. I took my wee shammy‘s new Elemental spec for a spin in some lowbie instances (other than gnarly mana issues, it’s pretty fun) and went from 38-40 in no time.

I haven’t run lowbie instances in quite awhile. You meet some pretty interesting characters, like the French tank I ended up in Scarlet Monastary with…

imagine it with an accent

he was the only human in a party of lady spacegoats, you can't really blame him

But now my shammy has her hilariously fast-moving epic elephant mount! \o/

On a whim I decided to take my gnome mage engineer over to Gnomeregan to farm for the pet schematics (lil smoky and the pet bombling). The bombling is a guaranteed drop from Thermaplugg, but the lil smoky schematic is a random drop from Arcane Nullifiers. (Here’s a guide to farming these if you’re curious!) After about 6-7 instance resets I gave up on lil smoky for the time being and ported back to IF to craft my bombling.

if only I could sic it on people

bonus points if you know where the guild name came from!

I just don’t have the patience these days to farm endlessly for random things; I get all ADD and start shifting in my chair like a 6-year-old hopped up on sugar. I have to start doing something different lest my brain begin to implode.

Shortly before bed I queued up brand-spankin-new-80 Nikoel for a random regular-mode dungeon and was plopped square into a Forge of Souls run. The rest of the group consisted of an uber-geared protadin and his pocket tree guildie, a feralkitty, and a random DK. Due to the awesome tank and the many undead in the dungeon, lil crappy-geared Nik didn’t do too bad, pulling a respectable 2nd on the damage meter… right behind the uber tank >_> Unfortunately the RNG didn’t fall in her favor and all drops were cloth or otherwise useless for her.

Speaking of the new ICC 5-mans, when I ran Avvy’s random heroic on Saturday I found myself upon zone-in joining a HoR run in which the group (a pally tank, druid healer, lock, and mage) was already huddled inside one of the cubbyholes in the Frostmorne room. This doesn’t look promising, I thought, but the group members were friendly and the pally tank seemed well- enough geared for the instance. We started the event and took down the first few waves with ease, but as the difficulty ramped up we lost our mage, with the lock’s health dropping rapidly. By the time the boss hit it was down to me, the pally tank, and the druid healer, but we managed to eck out the win. After the obligitory rezzes and rebuffs we started the second wave, and what should the first group of ghosties drop but…

The Battered Hilt! amgamg *insert “squeee!” noises from the entire group here*

We agreed to all roll Need. Somehow the dice were tipping my way and I found myself with a scratched and dented hilt plopped into my bags! \o/

The rest of the instance went utterly smooth (I still get a kick out of the “flee the Lich King and his aura of hurty” part) and I was back in Dala with my delicious cargo in no time.

Now to decide what to do with it… I have several alts that could totally use the resulting weapon (unfortunatley there’s no dagger option for Avvy *le cry* though I guess after the recent Mutilate nerf-whipping it might not be a bad time to go combat anyway… though combat, ugh… I’m a stealthy rogue, not a rage-less warrior!) and of course there’s always the temptation to put it up for sale (can you believe the prices people will pay for this thing?!) but that feels kind of wrong… think I’ll just be hanging onto it for now.

In RL news, I finally took down the Christmas tree. It was a sad, sad day for the little spider who’d decided to make his home at the top…

January 5, 2010

Well, my victory over the dreaded Disconnect Boss was short-lived. I was feeling all sprightly and carefree, coasting through my dailies with nary a DC, and decided to test my mettle in a random heroic. I tossed my name in the hat and had time to eat dinner, do my fishing and cooking dailies, and putz around Dalaran for a bit before the LFG tool told me my dungeon was ready.

ToC 5-man! (for some reason I’ve usually had luck with this instance and get a group that can clear it effortlessly, so it doesn’t tend to strike fear into my heart like perhaps it should.) I zone in and pick up my lance. We beat down the mounted trash and move on to the final three. I’m charging the giant tauren and…

My screen freezes. Seconds pass. My computer makes churny noises of doom and I realize I am disconnecting again. BAM! Login screen. I shake my fists to the heavens.

I log back in and apologize to my group for the DC and am greeted with this little gem from one of the asshat 12-year-olds of the Whirlwind battlegroup:

asshat

In hindsight I wish I had left the group right there, but I had already waited half an hour just to get into a dungeon.

We move on. Suddenly I’m lagging like crazy, the screen freezes again and when it un-sticks I find myself dead in green goo. The asshat shaman from Misha calls me a “jew” again (seriously… what the crap?)  and I squash the growing urge to flip him the proverbial wow-bird. Alas, I still have the Ignore list bug and cannot add him to it, so I put his name on my craptard-list for future reference. Of course, at the end of the instance, he Needs everything he can and leaves immediately.

I switch over to my restodruid Nadeau for another random heroic, hoping in vain that the DC in my last instance was random bad luck and not related to my problems of old. Fortunately by this point some guildies want to run randoms, so I queue up with my friends Annabela and Brighthammer and a few others. We are assigned an instance immediately – AN! woohoo! Quick and easy.

Right after the first elder pull I DC again and my wow client completely flips out and won’t let me log into my server at all. I kill wow entirely, start it back up, and log back in whilst muttering rabidly under my breath. My guildies, uber as they are, have already killed the first boss, completely minus a healer. Go guildies!

Then the DC gremlins got bored with me, or wandered off to torture some other poor sap, and I was able to finish the instance in peace. Afterward Annabela wanted to run her new 80 tanky druid through normal ToC for the trinket and insisted I bring my brand-spanking-new-80 pally along with. As Nik still reeks heavily of that fresh-80 smell I was a little nervous about taking her in there (heck, the LFD tool won’t even let her queue for normal ToC! I think its exact words were “your gear is too fail, nub”) but my guildies are awesome and insisted I come along.

Sadly, Nikoel puts out more DPS as a wee 80 than I think my kind-of-crap-but-kinda-ok-geared shadowpriest does now (when not Mind Sear-ing her way to loldeeps). I leveled Nik mostly through quests and this first level 80 5-man experience was eye-opening. Titan Critline was having a heyday. NEW RECORD! NEW RECORD! I think she  hit 3k at one point – not terribly shabby for a toon attired almost entirely in heirlooms and quest greens. Wings + Divine Storm = weee!  Retadins are FUN!

Of course, the RNG not-so-subtlely dropped a ton of spellpower plate as if trying to lead Nik down the doomed tenuous path of healbot-dom. I will resist!

————————–

I just heard there’s now a blue drake mount that drops from the last boss of Oculus. Well… at least you can say Blizz is making an effort to fix the group-dropping plague that seems to afflict at least 50% of the people that set foot in there.

Victory music!

January 4, 2010

Last night after my attempted wow-fixes I logged in and managed to stay connected for about 2 hours without a DC before logging for the night. I ran a random heroic on Avvy (during which  I discovered I have a bug wherein I can’t add players to my ignore list, which apparently Blizzard is “aware of” but has no fix for at this time… augh, how shall I shield myself from the ninjas and asshats of the Whirlwind battlegroup now!?) and, after a few quests in Sholazar, dinged 80 on my paladin (woohoo! another toon ready to be mocked/kicked in heroics) – so it looks like my DC problem may be fixed! I would still like to see if it happens during a raid, where it’s the most frequent/tourette’s-inducing… but I’m cautiously optimistic.

80 80 80 hoy hoy hoy

my pally is 80! haha, I caught her blinking

Before bed I logged on my wee shammy with determination to at least get her to 40 at some point so she has a fancy fast-moving elephant to ride around on. I respcced her Elemental (Enhance and I had a bad relationship, I realize this is likely because I didn’t quite hit the point of being able to talent into dual-wielding, but I was just OVER it) and sent her some heirloom gear, hoping to be able to both dps and possibly off-heal my way through lowbie instances, which is highly preferable to questing through Tanaris/Feralas/STV/Badlands/etc for the 8th time. So now she looks slightly ridiculous in her T2-knockoff heirloom shoulders…

sillyshammy

having played Alliance forever, I never got to experience these babies in Vanilla wow

Is it just me though or does it feel like you need like 20 action bars to play a shammy? I already have a metric crap ton of totems and my little toon is only 38… her bars are already crammed full of all the spells and tricks that shammies get. (My rogue on the other hand has room for music macros, vanity pets, etc etc) I don’t know how I’m gonna fit more crap on there. (I suppose reading up on what’s needed for the spec might be helpful…)

Guess I’ll go back to working now and maybe read up a bit on protadin-ing for my fresh 80 pally if I get some time… not that I WANT to be That Tank with 26k health, but we all gotta start somewhere!

(BTW, in reference to the title of this post, this mod is awesome if you like Final Fantasy victory music to play when you down a boss, or fail music to play when you don’t :3)

———————-

Edit 4 hours later: I’ve barely made a dent in this post on protadins over at EJ, and my eyes are already glazing over… there is a crap ton of stuff to think about as a tank x_X Is it really that complicated? Can’t I just throw on some defense/stam gear and have a go at it?

*watches healers flee in terror*

time to dual spec

January 1, 2010

Reading up on post-3.3 restodrood changes it looks like haste has become the AMG NEED MORE stat of the moment. My lil resto dood Nadeau is not even close to well-geared (his gear is a curious mix of naxx and ToC10/badge stuff) but I think that just makes respeccing even MORE important for him. The spec du jour seems to be 18/0/53 for a HoTting machine. Think I also need to start running daily random heroics on him (I’ve been terrified I’ll get thrown into oculus, which I have never healed, or worse yet one of the new ICC heroics >_<)

I should mention I never dual specced this guy. Questing as a wrath-spamming restodrood isn’t THAT bad, I swear! Still, the main reason is I’m a cheapskate with my gold (my roommate, when he played wow, made fun of me for complaining about 20g items on the AH) and just didn’t want to drop the 1000g when I could do just fine slowly plugging through quests as a pathetic NE-form roots-moonfire-wrath machine. I’m beginning to think spending half my time as a fuzzy cuddly boomchicken wouldn’t be so bad, though!

Man, this toon has been the epitome of my wow-masochism – a few days ago I decided I would finally level his tailoring (which has languished at like, 195 for probably 3 years) and emptied the banks of all my toons in a rabid search for the metric crap ton of cloth it takes to level this freaking tradeskill. After much gold dumpage and a random lucky streak of skill points for a green pattern he sits now at 379, impatiently waiting for all the alts I have slowly lurching through Northrend to send him their cloth drops. (He took a brief break to pick up some novelty patterns in gnome form as well)

grind grind

don't tell me to use OneBag or Bagnon or whatever, I hates them

Gnome!Nadeau makes like a tree and leaves

Gnome druids would be awesome

Well I’m gonna log in and see what’s going on… by the way, happy new year and all that :>
