Pre-Cata OCD

December 1, 2010

Wow! I’ve been neglecting the poor ol wowblog. My wow life hasn’t been all that exciting so there’s not much to write about, I suppose! since the giant patch of world-breakingness hit I’ve mostly been going OCD on achievements (mostly fishing, cause I’m boring like that) and non-combat pet collecting. I did manage to pick up a few of the new non-combat pets and one rarity I’ve wanted for awhile – the Disgusting Oozeling! It only took days and days of running circles in Swamp of Sorrows killing slimes, but the ooze of cuteness is mine. Other pets I added to my roster were the Singing Sunflower (AMG it took me forever to beat the PvZ game in Hillsbrad… I had to look up strats on Wowhead >_<), Mr Grubbs (think I got a little lucky on finding this one so quickly), Withers (the quest chain to get this guy is actually pretty cool, got to visit that troll town you could never reach before in Darkshore), and Tiny Flamefly (another one requiring kind of a long questline).

I also finally went around collecting enough recipes to hit the Chef de Cuisine achievement and fished around a bit to work toward the Oceanographer and Limnologist achies (goodness these are going to be painful, heh). I still haven’t been torched by Deathwing, though…

OH and I got the most awesome hunter pet ever on my level-80-and-still-wearing-heirlooms huntard – a SEAGULL! I called him Mine ;D It’s tiny enough to look like a non-combat pet and flaps along happily with a grin on its face (beak?). Best pet ever? I also ran around and tamed some of the other newly-available pets – a fox, a mastiff, a beetle, and a green cat…. >_>

AMGsqueee

Yes I have been rather quiet lately, mostly because my WoW life has been a revolving door of mostly the same things over and over – I raid, I level alts, I raid some more – but today I got a Very Special Email, one that definitely injected a little shot of YAY into the doldrums.

BETA!

I almost deleted the email thinking it was yet another badly-worded, grammatically incorrect phishing scam, but noticed all the headers actually originated from blizzard.com. Could it be? I logged into my battle.net account to see first hand, and there it sat in shiny, sparkly glory – Cataclysm beta! SQUEEEEE

Blizzard probably sent out another mass wave of invites now that the expansion release is drawing closer (I got a beta invite to WotLK right around the same time and the servers were a giant lagfest with all the new people logging in at once), but I’ll take a beta key in any form!

To fulfill my roguish duty I’ll copy over my beloved dagger-wielder and see how she feels with a severely pruned talent tree and OLD WEATHER FLYING (can I get an amen!). I’ll also probably copy over my other 80’s just to check out the changes; my hunter and shadowpriest in particular are sounding like they will be interesting to test drive with new talents. My druid, I’m not sure about… I’ll spend most of the time logged into him crying over spilled tree form – and I probably don’t want to touch my paladin with a 10 foot pole, based on the feedback on the wow forums…

Sigh, beta installer at 18%… *twitch*

Lich King down!

August 10, 2010

YAY! After about 4 hours of attempts tonight we finally got him down. And now I’m srsly tired and have to work tomorrow, and I’m off to bed.

best screenie I got unfortunately

we were all just like YAAAY at this point

Finally I feel like I’ve “beat” WoTLK.. in a sense >_>

Defile haunts me

July 27, 2010

Got the chance to do a few hours of Lich King attempts with one of the 10-man groups from my guild last night and over the weekend. Can I just say OMG GET OUT OF THE DEFILE, PEOPLE.

That was our biggest problem – and I know there’s a somewhat random element to it (kind of reminded me of Malchezzar’s infernals in Kara, actually) but RUN AWAY RUN AWAY DO NOT STAND IN THE INKY BLACK DEATH!

The lowest we got him was about 30% but there was always some kind of unfortunate ending… someone getting defile and then getting grabbed by a valk, or that kind of thing. I have the feeling we can get him down soon, we just need a little luck!

It was a little frustrating as a Mutilate rogue (lacking uber aoe and having to target switch constantly) but I managed to do ok DPS. This seems like another fight that’s a little more friendly to ranged, unfortunately :\

more thoughts on this fight to come, I’m sure!

In other news I love the Guild’s new music video and you should totally watch it, even if you don’t normally watch the show <3

Why hello blog

July 12, 2010

I have missed you. All of this RL fitness crap is eating up so much of my precious wow time. However, I did spend some quality time on my bum over the weekend, mindlessly leveling my wee shammy alt (who is not as wee anymore and has dinged 51!) mostly because this is the last time I will be able to experience these old-world quests before they retire for good in Cataclysm. Oddly I have always liked the quests in WPL/EPL as they have so much background story and lore on the whole scourge/undead/plague thing, and give you kind of a forboding sense of what’s to come in WotLK.

Along the way I hit up the random dungeon tool for some easy XP and to hopefully complete my level 50 shammy quest (why are all the level 50 quests in ST? Gah). My first dungeon of the day was BRD, in which the tank charged into the first room, rounded up every single mob, died in a not-so-glorious smear on the floor, and proceeded to drop group, quickly followed by the rest of the party members. My, what an awesome way to start out the day!

By the end of it I managed to get the shammy quest done and picked up my somewhat lame quest reward before leveling her JC a bit (talk about a money sink, hoo boy) and calling it a night. Can I say that I’m also somewhat bummed that I don’t get Heroism until level 70? Because I am.

Oh, I also check my battle.net account every freaking day looking for a beta invite only to have my hopes daily smashed by cold hard reality. I think if I did somehow magically get into beta I would transfer Avvy over and then buy a bunch of heirlooms for a worgen… I may even level another rogue. Because, I mean, ninja werewolves, yo. (Plus, I leveled my rogue soooo long ago and I was such a noob back then, I’m sure it will seem like a whole new experience! >_>)

Oh, and I am very, very excited about Dragon Age 2. Do want!

Oh right, I have a blog

June 16, 2010

Whew! It’s been awhile. I kind of forgot I had this thing, to be honest. But I have been playing wow! In a mix of raiding on Avvy and leveling various alts I decided to add some RL running of things to the mix – namely, roads and treadmills. Let’s just say 5 years of playing wow (and working desk jobs) has not been kind to me, haha. So I’ve been following the couch potato to 5k training plan, gradually building up my mileage – I’m currently on week 6. I recommend it!

In my virtual life, raiding did get a bit of a jolt in the arm when we finally took down the Blood Princes in 25-man and made some attempts on Prof Putricide and the Blood Queen. I also got a chance to take on the Lich King in a 10-man semi-pug with one of my guildie friends, which was super fun – after getting over my initial noobness (I wiped the raid twice… gah) we got him down to 30%. The fight was pretty fun and I can’t wait to actually kill him and feel like I “completed” WotLK. After that I may actually take a break until Cataclysm, or just go casualavvystyle and level alties… I haven’t really decided yet.

It may end up being awhile as we still can’t get our raiders to show up more than one day a week – but the officers have decided to re-implement DKP with higher awards for progression bosses and attendance, so hopefully that will help!

Oh, and I love the new ICC buff… at 20% I can hit 13.4k DPS on fights like Deathbringer… pretty nuts. As a shining example of why I hate 10 mans as a rogue, I can only hit about 9.5k in the 10-man version (granted I was in a very ranged-happy raid group with not a lot of melee buffs, but that’s my point exactly… little “buff sponge” rogues really feel the loss of raidbuffs :( ah well…)

Chomping at the bit

April 23, 2010

Heh, I just realized banner!Avvy up above (and some of the other alties in the pic as well) is wearing old gear that I have  long since vendored – however, since I’m too lazy to update my banner every time I get new gear (well… at least new shoulders, heh, I could be like a pantsless TV anchorman for all you know!) you’ll just have to deal with sadly-out-of-date Avvy welcoming you to the site.

I also just realized my gnome mage is the only toon I have the helm displayed on… but that’s because engineering goggles are so AWESOME LOOKING >_>

Anyway!

I’ve been a bit… frustrated… as of late with state of raiding in my guild. We seem to be stuck and/or constipated with our raiding lately – the 25-man schedule has dropped from 2 times a week to 1  (which seriously hinders progression right there in my opinion) and we typically steamroll the first 4 ICC bosses with ease before beating our heads against festergut and/or rotface a few times and then calling it for the night. It feels like we SHOULD be able to down these bosses easily and I’m not sure what’s holding us back (aside from the aforementioned lackluster raiding schedule).

I have a coworker who took an extended break from wow shortly after WotLK came out. In the last 2 months, he reactivated his account, geared up through heroics, joined an up-and-coming ICC guild that was just starting to learn the Deathbringer fight when he joined, and is now knocking on the Lich King’s door with that same guild. All in the space of a little more than a month. (He doesn’t cease to rub it in on a daily basis, either ;P)

Meanwhile, my guild has paused time and floats ethereally in the plane of stagnation, repeating the same old dance week after week after week and not getting anywhere with our progression.

There may be an attitude issue at play here as well – raiders start to drop out like flies when we reach the “progression” fights (rotface and fester at this point) and I’m almost beginning to think they mostly want to tag along for the fights we can down easily and avoid wiping on learning attempts… which is incredibly frustrating to me. I WANT to progress! I WANT to learn new fights and experience the joy of downing a new boss for the first time with the guild! We’ve already lost several of our better-geared members to further-progressed pugs (they haven’t left the guild, but they don’t raid with us, either) and I have to say, as much as I hate to admit it, that option is looking pretty tempting these days…

I’ve talked to a few of my longtime friends from the RC days (some of whom are officers in the current guild) and they’ve expressed similar frustrations. I’m not sure what it will take to change this but having at least 2 raid days a week again is the first big step… heck, one raid day a week isn’t even casual… it’s more like pug status.

In other news, I blew ten bucks and picked up the Lil-XT pet. My new favorite thing is to bust him out when someone sets down one of those annoying train sets, as Lil-XT will immediately exclaim “NEW TOYS?! FOR ME!?” and run to the middle of the train set, then proceed to smash the crap out of it and blow it up. He then slurks back over to you with “I THINK I BROKE IT…” hahah. Clever Blizz, very clever!
