Defile haunts me

July 27, 2010

Got the chance to do a few hours of Lich King attempts with one of the 10-man groups from my guild last night and over the weekend. Can I just say OMG GET OUT OF THE DEFILE, PEOPLE.

That was our biggest problem – and I know there’s a somewhat random element to it (kind of reminded me of Malchezzar’s infernals in Kara, actually) but RUN AWAY RUN AWAY DO NOT STAND IN THE INKY BLACK DEATH!

The lowest we got him was about 30% but there was always some kind of unfortunate ending… someone getting defile and then getting grabbed by a valk, or that kind of thing. I have the feeling we can get him down soon, we just need a little luck!

It was a little frustrating as a Mutilate rogue (lacking uber aoe and having to target switch constantly) but I managed to do ok DPS. This seems like another fight that’s a little more friendly to ranged, unfortunately :\

more thoughts on this fight to come, I’m sure!

In other news I love the Guild’s new music video and you should totally watch it, even if you don’t normally watch the show <3

YESSSSS

Just saw this news on MMO-champion re: Hunger for Blood: (source)

It’s going away for Cataclysm.

AMG YAAAAAY

That is all.

An Avvy milestone

May 17, 2010

I hit a new benchmark last Tuesday night… I cracked 11k DPS on non-uberbuffed fights (by “uberbuffed” I mean fights like Twins in ToC and that kind of thing)! Naturally, these were melee-friendly fights in which I could park on the boss’s arse and flail happily away for the duration of the battle (Deathbringer and Festergut), but prior to last week I had never actually managed to maintain that kind of number throughout a fight. Of course, though I would love to take all the credit, the newly-buffed ICC damage bonus must be taken into account…

See my squishy Skada report!

(never mind the 15% ICC bonus >_>)

I think I need to reorganize my UI

I’ve been paying a lot more attention lately to energy pooling (making sure I have at least around 40-45 energy before using finishing moves) and also making sure I have at least 4 combo points before Envenoming. (I used to get impatient and just go ahead and Envenom at 3+, but after reading up on the issue, noticed the consensus seems to be that doing so causes lower DPS overall.) I’ve been tracking the duration of the Enevnom buff for awhile now and have noticed as my gear gets better it’s hard to not clip it sometimes with all the energy I regen (unless I throw another mutilate in there to burn energy) – I’m still trying to figure out if it’s better to burn energy/delay the next Envenom or just go ahead and clip the Envenom buff. From what I’m reading it sounds like slightly clipping the buff is generally the way to go.

I’ve almost enough Frosties to pick up the T10 helm, after which I will finally have the 4-piece set bonus. I would also really love to pick up some shiny new daggers; my old ToC dagger is looking pretty dull these days!

I’m itching to get some progression rolling – my guild has been inching forward (with a non-consistent raid team and one 25-man raid a week, we’re just now starting to work on 25-man Professor) at a pace that’s driving me a little nuts. Our 10-man teams are a little more progressed but unfortunately are run on nights I can’t attend. I guess that’s part of the price to pay to enjoy a “casual raiding” happy-atmosphere guild, but I would like to get a glimpse of the Lich King before Cataclysm rolls out…

Quick note on rogue changes for 3.3.3

February 19, 2010

Rogues

  • Rupture: The damage-over-time component of this ability can now produce critical strikes.
  • Talents
    • Subtlety
      • Filthy Tricks: Now Reduces the cooldown by 5/10 seconds and energy cost by 5/10 of Tricks of the Trade, Distract and Shadowstep abilities, and reduces the cooldown of Preparation by 1.5/3 minutes.
      • Ghostly Strike: If the rogue has a dagger equipped, this ability now deals 180% weapon damage instead of 125%.
      • Hemorrhage: If the rogue has a dagger equipped, this ability now deals 160% weapon damage instead of 110%.
      • Slaughter from the Shadows: Now adds 1/2/3/4/5% damage to all attacks in addition to its current effects.
      • Waylay: The debuff from this talent can now be caused by Backstab in addition to Ambush.
  • I’m meh on the Subtlety changes, but the Rupture change is interesting… it remains to be seen if this will swing the Mutilate pendulum back toward 51/13/7 with Blood Spatter, but only time and PTR testing will tell…. as current Muti DPS relies so much on high Envenom buff uptime, re-introducing Rupture might not be as feasable, making this more of a Combat buff overall. This could possibly vault Combat ahead of Muti even on single-target fights. We will see!

Avvy’s ICC mutilate gear list as of 3.3

    January 8, 2010

*Disclaimer: as my guild only raids normal-mode 10/25 mans, this will be a list of gear obtainable for noobs like me who don’t have access to the uber mode stuff. As much as I would like to have shiny green HEROIC! text on my gears, I’m also soul-crushingly realistic.

    Moving on!

This is an attempt to gather together a grab-bag list of mutilate upgrades for Avvy as of 3.3, following the mutilate stat hierarchy of AP, haste, and also hit and expertise. A star (*) indicates the highest-rated item (non-Heroic) for mutilate.

A note on Tier 10: EJ posters recommend grabbing the gloves and shoulders first, the offset chest or helm, and then the pants. The T10 helm and chest aren’t itemized the best for mutilate (ew, ArP!) and so would be your last upgrades unless you really want the 4 piece bonus asap and/or have no other options.

    Cloaks

    *Shadowvault Slayer’s Cloak – 25-man Gunship battle
Shawl of Nerubian Silk – 10-man Lord Marrowgar

    Chest

*Ikfirus’ Sack of Wonder – 25-man Gunship battle
Shadow Seeker’s Tunic – 95 Frost emblems, Dalaran
Chestguard of the Frigid Noose – 10-man Lady Deathwhisper (has ArP, but also a lot of Haste.)

    Feet

*Footpads of Impending Death – Leatherworking
Frostbitten Fur Boots – 25-man Morrowgar (also have ArP, but there’s not a lot of non-ArP boot options out there!)

    Rings

Ashen Band of Endless Vengeance – Exalted rep with the Ashen Verdict
Seal of Many Mouths – 25-man Rotface
Band of the Bone Colossus – 25-man Morrowgar
Seal of the Twilight Queen – 10-man Blood Queen Lana’thel

    Hands

*Tier 10 – Sanctified Shadowblade Gauntlets – Dalaran vendor (tokened-up version)
Aldriana’s Gloves of Secrecy – 25-man Rotface (have ArP, but decent AP and Haste)
Tier 10 – Shadowblade Gauntlets – 60 Frost emblems, Dalaran

    Head

    *Geistlord’s Punishment Sack – 25-man Prince Valanar
Discarded Bag of Entrails – 10-man Professor Putricide (icky ArP paired with delicious Haste again)

    PANTS!

*Tier 10 – Sanctified Shadowblade Legplates – Dalaran vendor (token-empowered version)
    Gangrenous Leggings – 25-man Festergut
Tier 10 – Shadowblade Legplates – 95 Frost emblems, Dalaran
    Plague-Soaked Leather Leggings – 10-man Festergut

    Neck

*Wodin’s Lucky Necklace – trash drop in ICC
Sindragosa’s Cruel Claw – 25-man Sindragosa (that Haste with ArP thing again)
Precious’ Putrid Collar – 10-man Festergut

    Shoulders

    *Cultist’s Bloodsoaked Spaulders – 25-man Lady Deathwhisper
Tier 10 – Sanctified Shadowblade Pauldrons – Dalaran vendor (tokened-up version)
Tier 10 – Shadowblade Pauldrons – 60 Frost emblems, Dalaran

    Waist

Vengeful Noose – 60 Frost emblems, Dalaran
    Soulthief’s Braided Belt – 10-man Lady Deathwhisper
    Astrylian’s Sutured Cinch – 25-man Prof Putricide

    Wrist

    Toskk’s Maximized Wristguards – 25-man Deathbringer
Vambraces of the Frost Wyrm Queen – 10-man Sindragosa

    Daggers

Heaven’s Fall, Kryss of a Thousand Lies (1.8 speed mainhand) – 25-man Lich King
Stormfury, Black Blade of the Betrayer (1.8 speed mainhand) – 10-man Lich King
Lungbreaker (1.4 speed offhand) – 25-man Valithria Dreamwalker
Heartpierce (1.8 speed mainhand) – 25-man Lady Deathwhisper
Rib Spreader (1.8 speed mainhand) – 25-man Rotface
    Bloodsipper (1.8 speed mainhand) – 10-man Blood Queen Lana’thel
    Flesh-Carving Scalpel (1.4 speed offhand) – 10-man Prof Putricide

That’s it for now, but this post will surely be edited as gear is added (or differs from the PTR). May the RNG have favor!

    Rogue nerf inc

    January 7, 2010

    Sigh…

As many of you have suspected, we think rogue damage is too high. We will be making hotfixes to lower the maximum damage output of Assassination and Combat rogues. The Combat nerf will be slight. Both specs should still do just fine on damage meters (assuming skill, gear etc.) but shouldn’t be beating out other specs to such a large degree. (from http://wowraid.com/?topic=836)

Blargh… we were finally in a decent place! Our damage was good, especially if said rogue knows how to spec/gear, but compared to other equally specced/geared/skilled pure dps classes we were fine – as has been said many times, rogues should have a slight edge on the damage meters because we don’t really bring much else to the table other than our dps, all of our other “buffs” (if you can call them that) are easily covered by other classes. Remember the beginning of WotLK, when the rogue population was at its absolute lowest due to our less than stellar DPS (we are still the least-played class in the game, by the way)? Not that I forsee Blizz nerfing us to the ground, baby! but this might mean your average rogue (not kitted out in all shiny BiS gear) will see quite a drop in DPS.

I just hope Blizz doesn’t tamper with the recent awesome Deadly Poison mechanic change… hopefully the muti nerf will come in the form of tweaking Hunger for Blood a bit more. Guess we’ll have to see… right now there’s more fear of the unknown than anything.

    ———————————–

    Edit: and here’s the specifics:

The base damage bonus from Hunger for Blood has been reduced from 10% to 5%.

The bonus damage rogues gain from attack power for poisons has been decreased. This applies to Instant Poison, Deadly Poison, and Wound Poison.

Ughhhhh…. EJ has confirmed this is live, which I definitely saw during my guild’s raid tonight… I was wondering if I was just sucking at my rotation or what, but unbeknownst to me the nerf bat had already whapped me upside the head. The poison change in particular works out to 10% less damage from AP (per EJ). Considering how much of Assassination’s damage comes from poisons this could seriously hurt mutilate scaling and may potentially boost Combat up to the “best raid spec” pedastal.

    <darth vader voice> NOOoooOoOooOoOOoOoooo</darth vader voice>

I went hunting for rogue news after I ran a heroic post-raid with my guild’s well-geared enhance shammy, who roflstomped me on the meters. (Granted I understand shammies carry a lot of their buffs around with them and rogues are more or less buff sponges that scale a lot more in a raid environment, but still, I do think that’s a slight failing of my stealthy class as well.) Struggling to break 4k in a heroic now is not so much fun.

Hopefully Blizz will be watching these changes closely and maybe undo some of the damages to Hunger for Blood and/or poisons if they deem the nerf too excessive. I gotta have faith!
